On the territory of Komi-Permyatski Autonomous District there are over 169 ponds and saucer lakes of natural origin. Most of these lakes are former river beds. The Bolshoe Adovo (Big Adovo) and the Maloe Adovo (Small Adovo) lakes are located on the ancient depression of the surface level. During preglacial period it was a river bed down which the Kama was flowing towards Severnaya Dvina water collecting area. Both the lakes are in the north-west part of the district surrounded by harsh woods and swamps. Slough banks are characteristic of the Adovo lake. The lake is a nature reserve – it is the habitat of the whooper swan included into endangered species list. There are a lot of old and new mysterious legends originated beginning from Stroganovs’ times until present day, but these were not the legends that gave the lake this name (Adovo means Hellish). The lake got its name because of its inaccessibility rather than mysteriousness.
